LeBron James' playmaking capabilities will be front and center on the Philadelphia 76ers.
Philadelphia intends to deploy James at point guard for a significant amount of time on offense next season, ESPN's Shams Charania reports
The move would allow the 41-year-old to serve as the primary facilitator on a starting lineup that will likely feature three other talented scoring options on the wing in Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Jaylen Brown. It could also create a formidable two-man game with James and former MVP center Joel Embiid.
The 6-foot-9 James last played the point full-time during the 2019-20 campaign for the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the franchise to its first NBA championship in a decade. James posted an NBA-best 10.2 assists per game during the regular season that year - the only season he's led the league or averaged double-digits in assists in his 23-year career.
He also registered 25.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in 2019-20, well above the 20.9 points and 6.1 boards he averaged in 2025-26.
Maxey has been the 76ers' first option at point guard for most of his six-year career, but the 25-year-old has experience playing off the ball. During James Harden's only full season in Philadelphia in 2022-23, Maxey thrived in a system with Harden at point guard, recording 20.3 points per game while shooting a career-high 43.4% on threes.
